iOS 4.0.2 Update Kills JailbreakMe and PDF Exploits [Updates]

Apple’s released updates for iPhones, iPod touch models, and iPads that closes a nasty PDF-based exploit. That same exploit is what made one-click jailbreaking possible, of course, so upgrade if you’d like a sanctioned, secure, warranty-stable model, or hold off for future work-arounds. More »

Is It Legal to Jailbreak and Unlock Your Cellphone? Copyright Office Officially Says, “Yes” [IPhone]

We’ve always considered jailbreaking well within the bounds of legal iPhone use, but if you’ve ever been concerned that jailbreaking your iPhone wasn’t actually legit, the New York Times reports that The Library of Congress’ Copyright Office has officially deemed jailbreaking exempt “from a 1998 federal law that prohibits people from bypassing technical measures that companies put on their products to prevent unauthorized uses.” More »

Brush Up on Your Mac Terminal Kung-Fu [Terminal]

The Super User forums has a collection of tips and paste-able commands for Mac OS X’s Terminal that are, by turns, brilliant, funny, and obscure but great. Suggestions include quickly checking what apps are eating your memory (top -o vsize), run a Spotlight-style search from the command line (mdfind), and a clever little script that one user put together to trick his wife into thinking a MacBook has overheated and needs to be shut down—so he can grab it back. Chrome only: Up until now, closing the main Gmail or Google Apps mail tab in your browser would close down any connected windows you had open, too—compose windows, Gmail tasks, popped-out chats, and the like. Now Gmail's fixed that with a JavaScript tweak for Chrome, so you can keep working on the email, or keep a conversation running, after you’ve closed down your main inbox. uTorrent for Mac Upgrades to Beta, Gets Interface Overhaul [Updates]

Mac only: uTorrent, the most popular BitTorrent client on Windows, has moved from alpha to beta for OS X, boasting a completely native Mac client with a brand new interface. Most Mac users are probably happy with Transmission, but the lightweight uTorrent is definitely worth a look—not only is the new UI much better than the old one, it's much nicer than Transmission's if you download a lot of torrents at once. Furthermore, uTorrent can definitely compete with Transmission on lightness, while still having some of the more advanced features of something like Vuze (though Transmission continues to gain advanced features with each update). If you're a recent Mac convert looking for a more familiar torrent client, or just a heavy downloader unhappy with Transmission's more minimal UI, the new uTorrent beta is definitely worth a look.
