DIY Pipe Shelving Fits Any Wall or Taste [Weekend Project]

There are a lot of nice bookcases out there, but many of them don’t fit your exact walls, and most can’t be installed in an apartment. That can be worked around in crafty style with plumbing pipes and some weekend time.

Using actual plumbing pipes and wood boards of their choice, a couple with really high walls but not a lot of leeway for in-unit construction built a perfect set of shelves for their stuff. Using a previous Apartment Therapy how-to, Elizabeth and Mike, with the help of handy friend Roger, bought and designed custom shelves for a price that’s not all that shocking:

In order to keep costs down, Roger designed a unit using standard measurements, so that no pipe or pine boards would need custom cuts. They found everything they needed at Home Depot for $250 (including all basic supplies, like tarps, tools, and brushes). The black matte finish of the pipes wasn’t exactly what they had envisioned, but they loved the result.

Use a Hotel-Style Curtain Setup for Better Sleep [Sleep]

Some bedrooms catch a lot of sleep-disturbing light at night, but many sleepers like to wake up with a bit of natural light. Meet the morning halfway with a hotel-style setup of curtains over sheers, as suggested by Apartment Therapy.

The home and design blog isn’t talking about the magnetic-latched, absolute blackout curtains you’ll find at some motels with too much light. Instead, find a pair of heavy drapes that match your decor, and run them over some gauzy, privacy-providing sheers you can pick up fairly cheap at your local general merchandise store. As Apartment Therapy suggests, this setup blocks the majority of street lights, passing headlights, and other sleep-disturbing lights at night, but gradually lets in an adjustable amount of light each morning to help you wake up.

You could also combine this treatment with another measure, like the DIY window frosting Jason showed us. If you’ve found the beautiful mid-point between sound sleep and natural light mornings, tell us your own solution in the comments.

Hide Ugly Door Buzzers with a Hinged Mirror [Apartments]

No matter how nice the pads, some rental buildings have very ugly legacy items in plain view: intercoms, doorbells, even exposed electrical boxes. Home improvement website Unplggd has an easy solution for covering them up.

All you need for this project is a few cupboard hinges, some screws and a Molger mirror from IKEA. Depending on how far the electrical unit in question protrudes, other things might work—regular mirrors or pieces of art, for example.

I simply mounted the mirror backwards in the frame and used the base piece from the second pack as a replacement top piece (since Ikea has it designed that you slide the mirror in from the top afterward so for our needs the top lip would have been missing). I bought some hefty cupboard hinges from a local hardware store and a little metal L-bracket and mounted the mirror to the wall. The hinges are more than strong enough to hold the mirror but I use the L bracket to hook the mirror on when closed so as to make sure that it is level. So now it just looks like a chunky mirror yet we can open it up. . .when we need to.

Note that this isn't necessarily such a great idea for certain eyesores—like, say, smoke detectors, since they need to be in open air. It should, however, work pretty well for other ugly units hanging on your walls.

Best Apartment Search Tool: MyApartmentMap [Hive Five Followup]

Looking for a new pad? Last week’s Hive Five offered a variety of tools to help you find a new apartment. The winner of the Best Apartment Search Tool vote was MyApartmentMap, an apartment search tool that also includes neighborhood data and comparison tools.

Following MyApartmentMap was the old-school "Pounding the Pavement"—sometimes the best apartments are the ones that never end up in a listing. Rounding out the top three, Craigslist with the excellent PadMapper front end that mashes up Craigslist listings and Google Maps.

For more information about the above tools and the other contenders, check out the full Hive Five.
