Yahoo Calendar Now Syncs with Your iPhone [IPhone]

For iPhone users who prefer Yahoo over Google for handling their online data, the Yahoo Mail blog runs down how to sync Yahoo Calendar with your iPhone.

To get started, there's no download necessary—just follow these simple steps on your iPhone and you’re ready to go. There’s no need to jailbreak your phone or do anything else that may be shady or complicated. Once you’re all set up, you can share calendars with other people, too.

The Mail blog points out some things you should know before you jump in:

Before you get started, there are just a couple of pre-requisites to set up your calendar to sync. First, you have to be running the latest iPhone software (3.0 or higher). Second, by syncing with your iPhone, we will switch you over to the all new Yahoo! Calendar 2.0 (Beta).

If you’ve tried out the Yahoo/iPhone syncing, let us know what you think of it in the comments. If you prefer Google Calendar, the folks at Google have been supporting contact and calendar sync to your mobile device since February.

Amahi Turns Old Systems into Full-Featured Media Servers [Downloads]

Wouldn’t it be neat if you could turn an old laptop or desktop into a media center that served and streamed movies, music, and files, and even backed up your other systems? With an Amahi installation, it’s not too hard.

Amahi is really a repository you add into an installation of the Fedora Linux system, but when you do, it gives that system a whole new look and purpose. From a web interface you can access from anywhere on your network, Amahi can organize and offer up access to movies, music (with streaming to iTunes and other players), photos, calendars, Outlook systems, and any old files you’re in need of. Amahi can also set up a VPN for your household network, giving you remote access to your files without too much more geeky configuration than the standard setup.

Amahi can run on pretty much any system that Fedora 10 can install on—that's about a 1.0 GHz processor and 256MB of RAM minimum. The developers are working on versions for Fedora 11 and Ubuntu, but for now, Fedora is just the base of home server that doesn't require an expensive license purchase or mastery of Linux to install. Free to download, works on any x86-based system.

Google Apps Will Soon Support Outlook Sync with Email, Contacts, and Calendars [Downloads]

Windows only: Google Apps Sync is a new free utility from Google that syncs your Google Apps (Premier or Education edition) email, contacts, and calendar directly with Microsoft Outlook.

With this move, Google’s looking to compete more directly with Microsoft Exchange, the business standard for syncing Outlook’s email, calendar, and contacts via the web. Features include:

  • Email, calendar, and contacts synchronization. For email, the plug-in uses the offline Gmail protocol, which is much faster than IMAP or other methods.
  • Free/Busy lookup and Global Address List functionality, which makes it easy to schedule meetings with your colleagues, regardless of whether they use Outlook’s calendar or Google Calendar.
  • A simple, two-click data migration tool which allows employees to easily copy existing data from Exchange or Outlook into Google Apps.

The plug-in isn’t yet available for download, but the download page claims it will be soon. Update: It’s now available at the link below. Whether you’re the person in charge or not, could you see your workplace using Google Apps over Exchange? Let’s hear your thoughts in the comments.
